Commonly referred to as a "walking out" Bayonet, this edged weapon was never designed to actually fit on any rifle, even the Mauser 1871 model after which it is named.

This is a nice Dress or Parade Bayonet, worn only on ceremonial occasions and when going on leave. These usually have a higher quality finish than the issue M-71 Bayonet, and this example does have lovely etching on the blade, with floral and patriotic motifs, though it is now quite faint. Even though the hilt has a catch spring, it has not been machined to fit on any rifle and there is no catch assembly whatsoever. It is really a Parade Sidearm made to look like a bayonet. For more information, please see Watts & White, The Bayonet Book, Page 172, Items 381-383.

The ricasso bears the trademark "King's Helmet" (Ritter-helm) of legendary German maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen.

Condition is overall good, with a fair patina on the brass, and a rough patina on the blade. This looks to have seen quite a bit of service and cleaning during its life. There are some chips along the edge of the blade, and heavy oxidation in spots across. The leather blade buffer is barely retained, rare to see.

The bayonet comes in good quality brass mounted leather scabbard and is a fine example with probably 125 years of age to it. It has shrunk a bit over time and is quite stiff, however it still correctly fits the blade with no issues.

Overall a good condition bayonet with some great display potential!

Specifications:
Blade Length: 19 1/4"
Blade Style: Single Edge
Overall length: 23 1/2“
Crossguard: 3 7/8”
Scabbard Length: 20"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-imperial-german-wwi-m-1871-mauser-walking-out-parade-dress-bayonet-with-etched-blade-scabbard-by-weyersberg-kirschbaum-cie
