These helmets varied considerably in construction, and many were purchased directly by the pilots rather than issued through a standardized military supply system.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Imperial German Army aviation service was known as the Fliegertruppen des deutschen Kaiserreiches during the early years of WWI. In October 1916, the various military aviation organizations were reorganized under the name Luftstreitkräfte. The air service operated aircraft, observation balloons, and airships in support of the German Army, with reconnaissance and artillery observation forming its earliest and most important duties.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis helmet is complete with its intended straps, snaps, chinstrap, and functional buckle. The construction is consistent with the type of close-fitting soft flying helmet worn by aviators during the early period of military aviation.
