This is a beautiful classic Lionhead German WWI Artillery Officer's sword. The all brass alloy hilt consists of a finely detailed lion head cat with red ruby eyes with floral backstrap and "P" guard. Nicely detailed throughout his whiskers, chin, muzzle, and especially the Lion's Mane. The handwork is beautifully rendered throughout this brass. The "P" guard has a decorative motif on the spine. The rain chapes have crossed cannons on one side and a knight’s head motif on the other.

The grip is black celluloid over wood, with a wire wrap. The wire is a bit loose now and the hilt has lost much of the gilding. There is some cracking in the black celluloid as shown.

The 31 7/8 inch blade of this sword is in good condition, and only shows light any signs of use or abuse, mostly along the edge. The plating is very well-retained with some areas of loss and bubbling, and this sword was never etched. These were originally intended ceremonial swords, and not really intended for cutting. The blade has a great nickel plated finish. There is a heavy amount of runner wear and normal wear to the blade.

The ricasso is likely stamped with the “King’s Head” and “King’s Helmet” over W.K.&C. trademarks of WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & CO SOLINGEN. Due to heavy oxidation on the ricasso, we cannot make out the marking for sure, but we recently had a sword with the exact same designs on this one, especially the crossed cannons and knight’s helmet on the rain chapes, so we are confident that this is also by WKC.

WKC is one of the more famous makers in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. They were chosen for their pre-eminence even within the center of German edged weapon manufacture to make the swords celebrating the Kaiser's day that Celebrated the city.

The scabbard is standard with a single hanging ring, and retains most of the black enamel finish. There is a bit of a bend to the scabbard and some small dents, which do not interfere with sheathing the blade.

Attached to the guard is an original troddel sword knot of gold and red, in good shape though the strap has very heavy fraying as shown. It should sit fine for display.

Overall a very good condition high quality Imperial German Officer’s Sword by a well-known Solingen maker.
