This is a fantastic example of one of the great romantic era Imperial German Army Revolvers. The M1879 Reichsrevolver, or \u003cem\u003eReichs-Commissions-Revolver Modell 1879\u003c\/em\u003e, was a service revolver used by the German Army from 1879 to 1908, when it was superseded by the Luger. The Model of 1879 was issued with a 7\" 10.6mm x 25R mm Barrel, which sported a rather fancy ring to the muzzle. In 1883 they introduced a shorter barrel version that had only a 5\" barrel, the M1883. Although the design was dated, the weapon was extremely robust, and they were still used through World War I. The M1879 is referred to as the \"cavalry model\" and the M1883 as the \"officer's model,\" by collectors, which were not official designations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese revolvers were single action only and were fitted with a robust safety lever on the left hand side of the frame, which functions differently depending on hammer position. If the hammer is in the fire position, the safety locks the hammer completely. If in the half-cock position, it locks the hammer there, facilitating reloading of the revolver or removal of the cylinder. They also have a very robust ring on the bottom of the grip, for securing the revolver to the uniform.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere were made by various different makers, and this example is marked \u003cstrong\u003eS \u0026amp; S. V.C.S. C.G.H over SUHL\u003c\/strong\u003e. This is the marking of the Suhl consortium of arms makers consisting of Spangenberg \u0026amp; Sauer, V.C Schilling \u0026amp; Cie and C.G. Haenel \u0026amp; Cie, who supplied Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur Revolver bears serial number \u003cstrong\u003e1738\u003c\/strong\u003e on all major parts of the revolver including the barrel, barrel trunion, frame, cylinder arbor pin, and back of the cylinder. It is even marked inside of the grips, with shortened number 38 on the smaller parts! This makes this a very desirable \"ALL MATCHING\" example, and it's a great one! There are also various proof marks on most parts, was was standard for German issued weapons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe grips are in very good condition, with a lovely color, and the metalwork still has almost all of the original \"plum\" colored blued finish. White paint has been used to enhance the markings in many areas, making them much easier to read. The bore looks pretty much MINT, with bright finish and crisp lands and grooves. The loading gate works perfectly, and mechanically the action is very tight.
