One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding original Imperial German Krieger- und Landwehr-Verein veterans’ association flag dated 1884, made for the communities of Erxleben, Möckern, and Polkau. Associations of this type brought together former soldiers and Landwehr veterans, including men whose service dated to the wars of German unification and the Franco-Prussian War era.

The Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 was one of the defining conflicts of 19th-century Europe and resulted in the defeat of the French Second Empire, the capture of Napoleon III, and the proclamation of the German Empire at Versailles in January 1871. Prussia supplied the political and military leadership of the new empire, while units from the wider German states fought together against France. The war became a central reference point in Imperial German veterans’ culture, and associations such as the Krieger- und Landwehr-Vereine preserved the memory of wartime service through reunions, commemorative events, memorials, and elaborate association flags such as this one.

The flag measures 51 x 59” with magnificent fringe that is well-retained with some areas of stitch loss. Including the fringe, the flag measures roughly 57 x 61”. The flag is over 140 years old, and the hand-painted portions are well-retained for their age. There is some minor tearing in spots in the lower portion of the flag, and as mentioned, the fringe is coming off in some places. The flag is understandably very weak and needs to be handled carefully to prevent further damage. Along the non-fringed edge of the flag are small holes from nails that were likely used to hang this in the veteran’s meeting hall.

One side of the flag bears a gorgeous painted Prussian eagle with its mouth open and tongue stretched out. It carries a scepter and orb and is surrounded by vinery and the painted script:

Krieger-und Landwehr-Verein
Erxleben Möckern u.
