This is a great example of the bayonet for the 8 mm Puska 35.M (Rifle 1935 Mannlicher), which was adopted by Hungary just prior to the Second World War. It comes complete with its original steel scabbard and leather frog. These were manufactured by Femaru Fegyver És Gépgyár Reszvenytarsasag (Hardware, Weapons and Equipment Factory L.L.C.) of Budapest, also known as FÉG, who designed and produced the rifles as well. Both the bayonet and scabbard have the "Cross of St Stephen" proof mark. It has the serial number: A-47054. This 35M Bayonet is made with front sights. Infantry issued bayonets were made without the front sight.

This bayonet utilizes the French Berthier-style crosspiece and press stud arrangement. However, the remaining features are quite unique. The flattened cruciform blade profile makes for a very stout blade, much stronger than a typical cruciform blade. The round pommel is meant to unscrew to allow replacement of the one-piece wooden grip, but this one does not unscrew. The rifle has a stud in front of the upper band, which inserts into the bayonet's pommel to secure the bayonet in place.

This example is in good condition, with the expected wear from age and use. These blades were issued with bright blades and blued handles, though over the decades both have faded to a mottled gray. The blade doesn’t show any serious sharpening, and there is staining and some past pitting.

The scabbard is in very good shape, though it appears to be repainted in the original color. The leather frog also appears in very good condition for its age and might be added.

During WWII, the alliance with Germany led to most of the 35.M rifles being converted to take German ammunition as well as bayonets, so most of the original bayonets were discarded, making them quite hard to find.

This is an excellent opportunity to add a rare Hungarian bayonet to your collection.
