This is a nice example of the relatively plain Dove Head sword worn by Army NCO's, made by the well-known firm of Paul Weyersberg & Co., Waffenfabrik (Weapons Factory), a highly desirable maker of edged weapons. This sword design is a simplified version of the Officer's dove's head sword, without the decorative designs and engraving usually seen on the hilt. However, this example was ordered with a great "Triple Etched" blade, which we do not usually see on these, so the owner must have been relatively well off. It has the standard "P" guard used on German dress swords, with a simple cross guard and plain rain guards (chappes). The hilt on this example is made from nickel-plated steel, showing a lovely oxidized patina to the plating, with some areas of bubbling and plating loss. We have also seen these in gilt brass, nickel plated steel, as well as solid nickel, so there looks to have been a wide variety of materials used.

The grip is a very nice black celluloid over a wood base, which is still shiny and free of cracks, dents, and other damage. It is wrapped with a skein of four plated copper wires, which has the center pair twisted. The wrapping shows wear and oxidation, but is still complete and tightly in place. The hilt is still tight on the tang, with no wobble, and still retains the original leather blade buffer on the top of the guard. There is no finger loop, but it does not look like this sword ever had one.

The 31 5/8” blade of this example is in very good condition, nickel-plated and "Triple Etched", showing etched panels on the sides as well as etched foliate designs on the spine of the blade. The right side panel shows "crossed swords" in the middle, so this could be for a cavalry NCO, and there is a nice stand of arms in the middle of the left side. Both sides are surrounded by lots of foliate designs in the etching. There is no major oxidation to the blade, and the edge is correctly unsharpened, however there are tiny dents and dings down much of the edge, as ell as the tiniest of bends at the very end of the tip.

This example was made by Paul Weyersberg & Co., Waffenfabrik (Weapons Factory) of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is etched with a partial PAUL WEYERSBERG & Co. / SOLINGEN in double ovals around the firms trademark "Sword-and-Wreath" logo, which was the only marking they used during the Third Reich era. This company was one of many in Solingen owned by members of the Weyersberg family, and was founded in 1840, but not registered with Solingen until 1921. They made a large number of edged weapons during the interwar period, and then during the third reich era. The company survived the war, but ceased production in 1955. Anthony Carter.

The scabbard of this example is mostly straight and free of major dents, with a slight bend right by the drag, which does not interfere with sheathing the blade. It still retains the original black enamel lacquer at about 75%. There is some checking, crazing, and scratching in the finish, with no signs of having been refinished. The original hanger ring and square loop for "hitching up" the sword are still intact.

Overall a very good condition high quality NCO sword with a great Triple Etched blade, made by a desirable German sword maker, based in Solingen, the "City of Blades" in Western Germany.
