Here we have a very nice set of four German WWII belt buckles, all in lovely service used condition with a great patina. During the NSDAP period the number of different types of belt buckles used by the military and civic organizations rapidly increased, making them very popular items to collect for USGI's once the war was over. This represents the typical "haul" a buckle collector might have brought home after the war.

The first item in this set is a very nice WWII German Wehrmacht Luftwaffe EM/NCO's Belt Buckle (Koppelschloß). It is embossed with the wartime Luftwaffe straight tail eagle surrounded by an oval laurel leaf wreath. Nice aluminum injection molded construction box buckle with a pebbled background. The buckle is in good condition, with all the pebbling in good condition, and much of the detail in the eagle present. There is however deformation to the buckle and a good amount of wear. We were not able to see any maker marking.

The second item is a very nice condition somewhat rare WWII German Kriegsmarine (Navy) EM/NCO's Belt Buckle (Koppelschloß). The Navy used the standard Wehrmacht pattern buckles, but instead of the Field Gray color used by the Heer, they usually painted them a gold color. However, this was deemed most likely not the best color to use in Küstenartillerie (Coastal artillery) emplacements, so in 1937 they began to issue these dark blue belt buckles instead.

The Buckle design features a smooth outer field with central, high relief, embossed Wehrmacht eagle with down swept wings to slightly domed center, encompassed by an oak-leaf cluster to bottom and bears the Wehrmacht motto GOTT MIT UNS, (God [is] with us), on the top. The oak-leaf cluster and script are on a ribbed background and encircled by an inner and outer simulated twisted rope border. The navy blue paint is relatively well retained, however there is wear and areas of oxidation from use in service. The back of the buckle is nicely stamped with maker mark R. S. & S., for R. Sieper & Söhne of Lüdenscheid, Germany, a city with a very large garment accessories industry. The leather tab, which would often be on buckles by this maker, is unfortunately missing.

The third buckle is a very nice WWII German HJ National Youth Organization Belt Buckle (Koppelschloß). This example is a wartime example, made with a stamped and crimped steel box body, which was then nickel plated. The front is embossed with the HJ motto Blut und Ehre (Blood and Honor) on a ribbed field with a double border around the HJ Emblem surmounted by an Eagle. The buckle has lost much of the nickel plating on the obverse, allowing the steel to oxidize, and the reverse is in similar condition, with a bit less plating loss. It has a great "been there" look that is impossible to duplicate. We do see what looks to possibly be an (RZM) marking with the number 50 next to it under the adjustment claw, but it is not clear.

The fourth and last buckle in the set is a very nice well patinated WWII German Sturmabteilung (SA) EM/NCO's Brass Belt Buckle (Koppelschloß). The front features an embossed insignia with the standard NSDAP Political eagle with downward sloping wings, which is inside a double rope border. The area between the simulated ropes has a ribbed texture, with a spray of oak leaves at the bottom. The head of the eagle is fully inside the inner rope border, which is called the "Small Eagle" variant. This example is a two piece example, with a stamped brass body, stamped catch, and soldered on front insignia. As is usual there are no maker markings present.

A very nice set of German WWII Belt Buckles, perfect to start your German Belt buckle collection!

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-set-of-four-service-used-belt-buckles-aluminum-luftwaffe-steel-coastal-artillery-brass-sa-and-steel-hj
