This is a nice service used example of a wartime production production 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger, which looks to have seen use and service in the field. There are some components missing on the scabbard, and there is definitely some damage to the dagger itself. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by Solinger Metalwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co. The celluloid grip of this 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger is a lovely caramel orange color, due to the fading of the material. It does have cracking and some small chunks missing near both the pommel and ferrule, and and one of the two bullion wrapped strands of twisted wire wrapping is missing. The grip is loose on the tang, with some parts definitely detached.

The hilt mounts are still quite nice on this dagger in spite of the use. The aluminum pommel is still quite nice, and is the type that was not antiqued or plated, though it does show some oxidation in areas. The embossed designs show some wear and oxidation as well. The crossguard is made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows little wear and has excellent feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling and still has a portion of the original factory blackening. The ferrule looks to plated steel, and has a lovely oxidized patina, having lost much of the plating.

The blade on this example is not nickel plated, which is common for the 2nd model dagger blades. It shows wear from use and cleaning, as well as some scratches consistent with some type of use, though it was not sharpened. We can still remnants of the factory final polish grind cross grain in some areas. This texture is iconic, and is the definitive identifying characteristic for a real WWII German Blade. There are some areas of light oxidation, an evidence of past staining, now removed.

This example was produced by Solinger Metalwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co. GmbH, also known as SMF, who were one of the major producers of this knife during WWII. Their "Seated King" over SMF / SOLINGEN trademark is seen on the reverse base of the blade. They were one of the major suppliers of edged weapons to the Luftwaffe during WWII. As the name implies, they were located in Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in Western Germany. For more information, please see J. Anthony Carter's fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS. Above the logo is a Weimar Eagle over 5, the standard Luftwaffe proof marking.

This scabbard is a fine, straight example, however it has lost all of the original plating, and now shows an on oxidized patina. The top hanger band is missing, and the lower aluminum band is present, but missing the hanger ring. It has the standard embossed hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle. The throat is retained by flush screws on either side.

This is a nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by SMG, offered in very nice service used condition, ready to display!

Specifications:
Blade Length: 10"
Overall length: 15 1/2”
Crossguard: 3 1/4”
Scabbard Length: 11 3/4”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-service-used-2nd-model-luftwaffe-dagger-by-smf-with-scabbard-1
