Original German WWII Refurbished M40 II SS Panzerkorps Battle of Kharkov Helmet - Stamped EF66

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a fine example of a totally original Model M40 M-1940 German WW2 large size 66 helmet shell, refurbished by a master German camouflage restorer. The interior, left side, apron of the shell has a stamped manufacturer's code and size E.F.66, indicating that Emaillierwerke AG, of Fulda, Germany manufactured it. It is also stamped with lot number 50 under the rear skirt. Size 66 is a nice large size that can accommodate liners from 58cm to 59cm or US 7 1/4 to 7 3/8. Size 66 shells are much harder to find and are therefore more valuable to a collector.

- The II SS PanzerKorps (II. SS Pz.Kp.) was formed in July 1942 from the 1st SS Panzer LAH, 2nd SS Panzer "Das Reich", and 3rd SS Panzer "Totenkopf" divisions.
- In early 1943 the unit was tasked with defending Kharkov against a major Soviet Offensive.
- Against orders directly from Der Führer to hold Karkov "at all costs", Generalfeldmarschall Erich von Manstein retreated and deployed a mobile defense.
- This tactic allowed him to defeat the Soviet advance that had started with the fall of Stalingrad and re-stabilized the front. This became known as the "backhand blow", and allowed the Wehrmacht to capture 615 tanks and had kill some 23,000 Soviet soldiers.
- This helmet represents one worn by a soldaten that served against impossible odds and yet closed the breach that was created with the fall of Stalingrad. Once again great feats were done with small depleted units
