Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a fine example of totally original Model M40 M-1940 German WW2 medium/small size 62 helmet shell. The shell is stamped Q 62 indicating that Quist in Esslingen, Germany manufactured it. Size 62 is a smaller size that can accommodate liners from 55cm to 57cm or US 6 5/8 to 7 1/8.
12th SS Panzer Division at the Battle of Villers-Bocage, France
- June 13, 1944 one week after the invasion, there raged a fierce battle around the small town of Villers-Bocage.
- Villers-Bocage was located in front of the town of CAAN which was the first objective after the invasion of Montgomery and British forces.
- The town was defended by the I SS PanzerKorp which contained the 12th SS Panzer Division 'jugend'.
- This battle was made famous by the exploits of by Tiger Tank Kommandeur SS Obersturmfuhrer Michael Wittman and his 101 Heavy Panzer Battalion.
- This helmet was representative of those 12th SS AHjugen forces at Villers-Bocage supporting Wittman's Schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101.
