Höller with Scabbard and Frog

Original Item: Only One Available. The K-98 dress bayonet was a dress version of the combat style, and was worn by enlisted and NCO personnel for dress and parade occasions. This also included civic organizations such as Police and Feuerschutzpolizei (Fire Protection Police) units. The bayonets were finished with a high-quality nickel plating, with often custom grip plates and black enamel painted scabbards. The choice of blade length was left to the purchaser, being a nickel-plated short (20cm) or long (25cm) version. There was usually a red or green colored felt insert in the rifle slot and the bayonet was suspended from a black or brown leather frog. Some had a functional bayonet latch, while it was ornamental on some, and others had no latch at all. This example has none at all.

This Fireman's Bayonet is in very good condition throughout, and is the 7 5/8-inch blade "short" version, which we do not often see. It comes complete with its original black enameled scabbard and black leather frog. The nickel plating on the steel hit is mostly bright throughout and remains over 80% intact, showing overall oxidation speckling, but no major flaking to the finish. It has the typical "S" shape crossguard used on the Fireman issue bayonet. The grip plates are the checkered black Bakelite type, in excellent condition and retained by solid nickel alloy rivets with dressed obverse heads.

This pattern of dress bayonet is very rare to find with this sawback style knife blade, with a short false edge on the top before the teeth. The blade is in very good condition, with the original nickel plating very well retained, showing some plating loss on the raised areas due to runner wear. There is also a bit of wear on the edge, and some at the tip, which shows just a bit of a dent. The edge is correctly not sharpened, and it is really a great example, with just a bit of wear and no signs of misuse. The original leather blade buffer is still present against the crossguard.

The ricasso is maker marked with a "losenge" style trademark logo that reads F. W. HÖLLER / SOLINGEN, surrounding the trademark Höller "Thermometer" emblem. This is a well-known maker from Solingen, the famous "City of Blades" in Western Germany, which produced many fine edged weapons. F.W. Höller, Waffenfabrik (Weapons Factory), located in Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. During the WWII Period they manufactured many SA and NSKK daggers, both with their "thermometer" trademark and later with the RZM code M7/33. They also produced numerous 98K bayonets and other edged weapons. The firm was founded in 1866, and registered in Solingen in 1883. By 1900 ownership had passed to Emil Höller, and it continued manufacture after WWII, finally closing in 1974. For more information please see J. There are no dents, and just light wear, showing the expected checking and crazing due to age. The body is held by the included black leather frog, which is in very good used condition, with some heavy finish cracking, as well as dry rot on the edges. All of the stitching looks to be intact, and it fits the scabbard nicely.

A nice, complete example of a rare sawback fireman's bayonet here by a known maker, ready to display!

Specifications:-
Blade Length: 7 5/8"
Blade Style: Single Edge w/ Fuller
Overall length: 12 1/2“
Crossguard: 2 3/4”
Scabbard Length: 8 3/4” + frog

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-rare-firemans-short-dress-sawback-bayonet-by-f-w-holler-with-scabbard-and-frog
