This is a genuine vintage World War II German Police NCO's Degen (Épée) Dress Sword, made by the desirable Solingen-based firm of Emil Voos. While we have had multiple examples of the Officer's version of the Police Degen, this is only one of a few of the NCO version that we have had, and they appear to be relatively rare. It is still in very good condition, looking to have seen only light use at formal events. The nickel plating throughout the steel fittings and the "D" guard is still present, with a lovely lightly oxidized patina. There are some areas of wear through, which has allowed the base metal to rust just a bit.

The pommel cap is the correct smooth type for an NCO sword (Officer's were serrated), and shows no signs of removal, though it has oxidized due to the plating flaking. The "D" guard is in wonderful condition, ending in the the usual teardrop quillon. The ferrule is crisp, decorated with six standing oak leaves separated by acorns. The ebony grip is in very good condition, showing light overall wear, and no cracking, chipping, or other damage. There is no wrapping, another appointment only seen on the officer's version. The inset Police Civic eagle insignia is also in fine condition, and looks to be zinc, with antiquing in the recesses of the design. The hilt is just a bit loose on the tang, as there is not really any way to tighten it when the wood shrinks

The 31 1/4 inch blade on this example is nickel-plated, unlike most we have seen, that have a matte steel finish. It does not show any signs of being refinished, so this must be how it was ordered. The nickel plating is of the highest quality and is retained at nearly 100%, with just a few areas where it shows wear through on the edge. The blade is still straight, and the edge correctly unsharpened and free of dents. The original leather blade buffer is present on top of the cross guard, showing very little wear of any kind.

The reverse ricasso is stamped with the Emil Voos trademark logo with a "Serpent around a stump", next to the makers name:

EMIL VOOS
SOLINGEN

Emil Voos, Waffenfabrik (Weapon Factory), also known as a Spezialfabrik für Jagd- und Sportmesser (Special Factory for Hunting and Sporting Knives), was a Solingen-based knife maker founded in 1925. The "Serpent-and-Stump" logo next to the company name and location was used on Officer Swords, as well as some early Luftwaffe Daggers in the WWII period, per J. Anthony Carter's work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS.

The scabbard is in very good condition, with the steel shell straight and free of bends and dents, just how we like to see them. The black enamel finish on the steel body of the scabbard is retained at over 90%, still shiny in most areas, with light wear and chipping. There is also the expected crazing and checking due to age, which confirms that it has not been refinished. There is no mount on the drag end of the scabbard as there would be on the officer version, while the upper mount is in the "Wotan's Knot" configuration, which is nickel plated steel. It is in very good condition, showing some minor oxidation to the plating, especially on the top where it contacts the leather blade buffer. It still has both retaining screws still present inside of the "knot" on both sides. The scabbard also retains the hanger ring, and the rectangular loop for "hitching up" the sword is present as well.

These police swords are quite rare and desirable, and only one of a few NCO types that we can remember having!
