This is an exceptionally scarce original German WWII Stielgranate 41, the large fin-stabilized shaped-charge anti-tank projectile developed for use with the 3.7cm Pak 36 anti-tank gun. Introduced during the war to restore useful anti-armor capability to the increasingly obsolete 37mm Pak 36, the Stielgranate 41 was an unusual over-caliber projectile whose long stem fitted over and into the gun barrel for firing.

This example is completely inert and contains no explosive material. It has been deactivated for historical display and study and cannot function as originally intended. NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

This incredible exceptionally rare example is totally inert and deactivated according to guidelines provided by the BATF and is not available for export. It is offered in very good condition complete with all fins and marked aluminum impact fuse, which can still be removed. The "stick" of the grenade can be unscrewed from the warhead, however the top cap of the warhead was reinstalled tightly, and cannot be removed.

The side of the warhead is marked 95 Ce 9 42, which would indicate September 1942 production, however we do not believe "Ce" is a maker code, as we have not heard of J.P. Sauer & Sohn making these grenades. The bottom of the "stick" is marked with 27 and possibly a maker mark but it’s too worn to read.

The fuse is marked with Waffenamt code WaA54, along with maker code eef 42, for 1942 production by X. Heine & Sohn of Vöhrenbach. This was a peacetime maker of nuts and bolts, associated with the manufacture of fuzes during the war. The round measures about 29 inches tall, and would look fantastic mounted on a wall!

The Stielgranate 41 was developed to extend the usefulness of the 3.7cm Pak 36 after conventional 37mm anti-tank ammunition had become increasingly inadequate against heavier Allied and Soviet armor. The new projectile used a large hollow-charge warhead whose effectiveness depended primarily on shaped-charge action rather than the high impact velocity required by conventional armor-piercing ammunition. The weapon entered service during 1942 and gave the lightweight Pak 36 a renewed close-range anti-tank capability.

Unlike a conventional 37mm projectile fired through the bore, the Stielgranate 41 was an over-caliber round. Its stem interfaced with the Pak 36 barrel while the much larger warhead remained outside the muzzle. Four sheet-metal fins stabilized the projectile after launch, producing the distinctive appearance that led to its comparison with an oversized rifle grenade.

Although highly effective against armor for its size, the Stielgranate 41 was limited by relatively low velocity and comparatively short practical range. It therefore served primarily as a means of allowing surviving Pak 36 guns to engage heavier armored targets at closer distances rather than transforming the weapon into a long-range anti-tank gun.

The combination of the complete Stielgranate 41 configuration, 1942-dated warhead marking, eef 42 aluminum fuze, WaA54 Waffenamt, all four stabilizing fins, removable stem, and approximately 29-inch overall length makes this an exceptional surviving example of one of the most distinctive German anti-tank projectiles of WWII. Its fully inert condition allows the unusual construction to be studied while preserving the original wartime components and markings that give the piece its historical significance.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-pak-36-stielgranate-41-37mm-high-explosive-anti-tank-stick-grenade-1942-dated-body-and-fuze-1
