This is a very good representative example of a German WWII Dove Head dress sword manufactured by the well-known Solingen firm Puma-Werk, Lauterjung & Sohn. The sword has the plain, relatively restrained hilt associated with many private-purchase Army dress swords of the period, with a nickel-plated P-shaped guard, plain langets, black composition-covered grip with twisted wire wrap, and a dove head pommel. The blade is maker-marked with Puma’s distinctive cat-head trademark and additionally stamped No. 9 on the opposite ricasso. It is complete with its black-finished steel scabbard and an unusual green-and-gold Troddel of presently unidentified pattern.

The grip is a very nice black celluloid covering over a wood base showing some very minor chips. It is wrapped with three strands of twisted nickel-plated wire, with the central strand being much thicker than the outer two. The wire is still tight without any serious play. The original leather blade buffer is still present.

Wrapped around the grip is a green German-style troddel knot, which is all green with a gold stem, which does not conform to any of the WWII patterns we are aware of. A good research project.

The 34” blade of this example is in great condition, and does not show any signs of use or abuse. These were ceremonial swords, and not really intended for cutting. The nickel-plating has very minor rust peppering across its length. There is some minor scuffing and no damage to the edge or tip.

On the rear of the blade, there is a Puma's Head Logo in a diamond over PUMA / SOLINGEN, the trademark logo of Lauterjung & Sohn, Puma-Stahlwarenfabrik / Puma - Werk of Solingen, Germany, the legendary "City of Blades" (Klingenstadt). This is a known producer of SS, SA, and NSKK daggers during the Pre-WWII period and after. This company was originally founded on a small scale in 1796, Nathanael Lauterjung officially opened a cutlery and knife making workshop in Solingen during 1855. After his death, the name was changed and registered as "Puma-Werk", to avoid confusion with the other Lauterjung-owned workshops in Solingen. For more information, please see J. The original black enamel lacquer finish is retained at about 80%, showing a lovely pattern of age checking and crazing throughout. There are areas where the finish has flaked away, allowing the steel to oxidize. The hanger loop and square slot for "hitching up" the sword remain, though they are missing much of the finish.

With its Puma-Werk Solingen trademark, No. 9 ricasso stamp, Dove Head pommel, plain nickel-plated P guard, intact wire-wrapped black grip, original leather blade buffer, unusual green Troddel, and approximately 80% original scabbard finish, this is a strong example of a German WWII private-purchase dress sword by one of Solingen’s established edged-weapons manufacturers.

Dimensions:
Blade length: 34”
Overall length: 39 1/4”
Handguard: 4 1/2”L x 5 1/2”W
Scabbard length: 36 3/4”

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-nco-doves-head-sword-by-puma-of-solingen-with-scabbard-and-troddel-no-9
