Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a fine example of totally original Model M40 M-1940 German WW2 large size 66 helmet shell. The shell is stamped EF 66 indicating that Emaillierwerke AG, of Fulda, Germany manufactured it. Size 66 is a nice large size that can accommodate liners from 58cm to 60cm or US 7 1/4 to 7 1/2. Size 66 shells are much harder to find and are therefore more valuable to a collector.
Notable history of the WWII M40 Caan Falaise Gap SS Helmet:
- The battle of Caan will forever be known as the pivotal point of the Normandy Invasion.
- A Day 1 Objective for the British, it took a month to dislodge German Forces.
- As the Germans Fell back, AH had another ill-advised offensive meant to throw the Allies back into the sea.
- Doomed to fail against the huge Allied wave of men and material, the attacking forces were surrounded with only one small escape point at a town called Falaise.
- SS units from the 1s t LAH , 2nd Das Reich , and 12th HJ all came together to hold the line to allow their fellow units to escape.
- Once again AH had led them to defeat in-spite of the efforts by these depleted units.
This helmet represents those men of 1st, 2nd, and 12th Divisions who were caught in the hell called Falaise.
