This is a heavily service-worn original German WWII M24 Stielhandgranate, or stick grenade, with components dated 1939 and 1940 and markings associated with Richard Rinker GmbH. The grenade retains traces of its original finish, surviving maker and inspection markings, and the original porcelain pull bead and cord inside the handle.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

The warhead is demilitarized; it no longer unscrews from the shaft due to heavy threading oxidation. It is painted the correct green over a red primer, and the stencil on the front is no longer intact, but for reference it would have originally read: VOR GEBRAUCH SPRENGKAPSEL EINSETZEN (Before use insert detonator). The top of the head is stamped with ЯR / 1939 for Richard Rinker G.m.b.H. in Menden/Iserlohn, the original designer of the M24 grenade. Under this is a white ink-stamped Waffenamt, WaA65.

The wood shaft of the grenade is clearly stamped with ЯR 791 1940, which corresponds a subcontractor of Richard Rinker G.m.b.H. in Menden/Iserlohn, the original designer of the M24 grenade. 791 is the subcontractor code, which we could not identify. The bottom end cap is still present though heavily corroded, but still screws and unscrews, with the original bead and pull string still intact. The wood shaft itself has some heavy wear with the shaft pulled away a bit from the head as shown, and a small chunk missing on one side.

The M24 was one of the most recognizable German infantry grenades of WWII. Its long wooden handle provided additional leverage when throwing, while the cylindrical explosive head used a friction-ignition system housed within the handle. The design developed from earlier German stick grenades introduced during WWI and was refined into the Model 1924 configuration during the interwar period.

M24 grenades were normally transported with the detonating component separate as a safety measure, accounting for the familiar warning stencil instructing the user to insert the detonator before use. The type remained in widespread German military service throughout WWII.

This example shows extensive oxidation and wear throughout, but the surviving 1939 Richard Rinker-marked head, 1940 dated handle, WaA65 inspection mark, subcontractor code 791, removable original end cap, porcelain pull bead, and pull cord make it a particularly interesting study piece. The mixed 1939 and 1940 component dates are also consistent with the assembly and continued service of interchangeable grenade components rather than a pristine factory-matched example.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-m24-inert-stick-grenade-stielhandgranate-by-richard-rinker-dated-1939-1940-stielhandgranate
