This is a very nice original German WWII Luftwaffe fighting or boot knife, complete with its black enamel steel clip back scabbard and bearing the desirable Eagle 5 acceptance marking on the blade ricasso. This compact fighting knife was designed for practical field use, with a substantial spear point blade, simple wooden grip scales secured by steel rivets, and a spring clip scabbard that allowed it to be carried on a boot, belt, or other suitable portion of the equipment. Examples of this pattern are closely associated with Luftwaffe personnel, including aircrew and Fallschirmjäger, making this a particularly appealing piece of German wartime field equipment.

This genuine WWII German Luftwaffe fighting knife is held in a scabbard that is designed to clip over the edge of a boot top or belt. It could also clip onto any part of the uniform and was easy to conceal. They were used throughout both world wars by soldiers in the trenches and with this particular style being used extensively by the Fallschirmjäger (paratrooper), Waffen SS and Luftwaffe pilots.

This example is in very good condition and features a blade that is marked with a faint 5 inside a Weimar Eagle on the ricasso, one of the standard inspection marks used on Luftwaffe edged weapons. The blade is the standard spear-point shape, with a full edge on the bottom, and half edge on the top. The top edge was specific to Paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger), as it helped cut through the rigging. Regular issue knives often only had one edge. We can definitely some minor period sharpeneing to the blade. It is still relatively sharp, so it should be handled with care. We can still see a good amount of the original factory final polish grind crossgrain on the flat portions of the blade.

The knife has wood grips with steel securing rivets, which are in good condition, showing light staining on both sides. The clip back scabbard has the black enamel paint in great shape, with light wear and crazing, and no major dents.

This example has an especially attractive service used appearance. The surviving Eagle 5 Luftwaffe acceptance mark, visible factory crossgrain, original wooden grips, intact rivets, and well preserved black enamel clip scabbard give it considerably more collector interest than a heavily altered or mismatched example. The minor sharpening and light grip staining are honest signs of use without detracting from the overall presentation. It would display particularly well in a collection devoted to Luftwaffe field equipment, Fallschirmjäger material, German WWII edged weapons, aircrew equipment, or military fighting knives.

Specifications:
Blade Length: 6 5/8"
Blade Style: Single Edged Spear Point Knife with Upper False Edge
Overall length: 11“
Crossguard: 2 1/4”
Scabbard Length: 7" with Boot/Belt Clip

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-luftwaffe-fallschirmjager-fighting-knife-with-scabbard-weimar-eagle-5-marked-1
