Size 57cm

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting original German WWII M38 Luftschutz Gladiator air defense helmet with an unusual one piece steel shell, late war cloth liner, and clear plastic chinstrap. The shell is notably unbeaded and lacks the usual front Luftschutz decal, while the use of simplified materials throughout gives it the appearance of a late production economy example. The rear interior is clearly lot marked L.239 / 25, and the liner measures approximately 57cm.

The helmet is constructed from relatively lightweight steel and finished in a dark matte blue rather than the glossier blue finish often seen on earlier Luftschutz helmets. The exterior shows only light service wear and remains free from dents, dings, or other major structural damage.

Unlike many Luftschutz Gladiator helmets, this example has no bead around the shell and no front Luftschutz decal. The combination of the one piece shell, simplified finish, cloth liner, and plastic chinstrap is consistent with the use of less expensive materials and manufacturing methods later in the war, although the exact production chronology of this specific configuration is difficult to establish with certainty.

The rear interior skirt is stamped:

L.239 / 25

All four original liner attachment split pins remain present, together with the cork spacers between the shell and liner band.

The liner is a simplified cloth type made from brushed canvas rather than leather. It has 9 fingers and still retains its original tie string, although the string is currently threaded through only one finger. The liner is mounted to a black fiber band that originally carried felt padding. Unfortunately, the felt has been almost completely destroyed by moth activity, leaving only remnants of the original padding arrangement.

One of the most interesting features is the clear plastic chinstrap, fitted with a single adjustable buckle. The strap remains in very good condition and shows no cracks, tears, or other significant damage. This type of synthetic strap is an unusual late issue feature and contributes considerably to the collector interest of the helmet.

There is a faint marking on the liner, but it is not legible enough to interpret with confidence. The liner measures approximately 57cm using a hat sizer.

Condition overall is very good for a late issue Luftschutz helmet. The matte blue finish is well retained, the shell remains straight and undamaged, all four liner pins and cork spacers are present, and the unusual cloth liner and clear plastic chinstrap survive. The principal condition issue is the near total loss of the original felt padding to moth damage.

For the Luftschutz or German civil defense headgear collector, this is a particularly interesting example because of its simplified one piece unbeaded shell, matte finish, cloth liner, black fiber band, and rare clear plastic chinstrap. The L.239 / 25 lot marking and approximately 57cm liner size add further collector detail, while the combination of late production features gives the helmet strong research and display appeal.

Formed in late 1932 the Deutsches Luftschutzverband, (German Air Protection League), was a voluntary organization designed to provide civil air raid protection in large civilian centers. Shortly after AH ascension to power the Deutsches Luftschutzverband was restructured and placed under the supervision of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, (National Air Ministry), under the control of Hermann Göring. On April 29TH 1933 the Deutsches Luftschutzverband was renamed RLB, Reichs Luftschutz Bund, (National Air Raid Protection League) and was given status as an official national organization tasked with all aspects of civil air raid defense. The RLB remained a voluntary organization with a small cadre of paid, full-time uniformed officials to oversee the organization's functions until June 1935 when obligatory service was introduced. Only the most basic uniform and equipment items were supplied to the cadre personnel, with the rest having to be bought personally by members. On September 26TH 1938 a specific helmet for RLB personnel was introduced that incorporated a raised horizontal "bead" between the visors and crown. These helmets commonly called the "Gladiator" style were supplemented with M35, M40 and M42 helmets that also incorporated a raised horizontal "bead" between the visors and crown. The Luftschutz also utilized a variety of captured helmets.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwii-late-issue-m38-luftschutz-gladiator-air-defense-helmet-with-one-piece-shell-cloth-liner-and-plastic-chinstrap-approx-size-57cm
