AH believed German youth to be the future of his 3rd Reich. The HJ (AH Jugend or HJ) National Youth Organization was formed officially in 1935, and with the exception of NSDAP ideology indoctrination was very similar to the Boy Scouts. Beginning at about the age of ten years, both boys aged 14-18 (AH Jugend) and girls aged 14-18 (Bund Deutscher Mädel) were enlisted in the Party-run organization. Within the organization, a degree of military style ranks were maintained, as well as the various "corps" or branches that existed in the Wehrmacht.

This was known as a HJ youth overseas cap or Allgemeine jugend Sommer-Mütze (General HJ summer cap). It is a cotton "whipcord weave" twill tan colored cap with hochrot (Deep Red or Scarlet) piping, which indicates they wearer was in the General-HJ Branch. The front features the correct BeVO HJ red and white diamond insignia, hand stitched to the outer fabric, which shows a bit of wear and age toning.

The interior of the cap is lined with orange "service cloth" type material, which shows some small holes and tears from use. The bottom of the cap still has a fully intact brown finished sweatband, which looks to be either very thin leather, or pressed paper faux leather. It is in really good shape, still supple and showing no tears, with just a bit of wrinkling. It seems to be about a size 56cm.

The cap still bears a original fabric RZM tag, though due to how the sweatband was sewn on, the top line is mostly covered. We can however see enough to tell that the top line is SOMMER-MÜTZE, or "Summer cap". The RZM logo is clearly visible on the right, and there is the Hersteller (supplier) number 959 ✱ followed by lot number 377841.

Overall condition is good, and definitely shows that it saw moderate service during the third reich period. The exterior shows scattered light staining, but no major wear or damage. The colors are very well retained, and the front insignia is in good shape, showing just a bit of staining.

This cap would make a wonderful piece for any German WW2 collection.
