Across the center is the machine-embroidered inscription:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAFRIKA\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lettering is worked in light silver-gray thread and is flanked by the characteristic inward-facing palm tree motif on either side. Narrow light-colored woven borders run along the upper and lower edges. \u003cbr\u003eThe cuff title is in good service-used condition. There is general toning and soiling to the tan material, with wear and scattered loose threads along the edges. Both ends are cut and frayed, accounting for its shortened length. The embroidered \u003cstrong\u003eAFRIKA \u003c\/strong\u003elettering and both palm trees remain very well defined and easily readable, while the narrow edge trim is still substantially intact.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ärmelband Afrika was instituted on January 15, 1943 as a formal campaign decoration recognizing qualifying German military service in the North African theater. It is important not to confuse it with the earlier AFRIKAKORPS cuff title. The earlier title was essentially a formation or service-identification insignia associated with personnel serving with German forces in North Africa. The 1943 AFRIKA band, by contrast, was a campaign award that could continue to be worn after the recipient left the theater. It was worn on the lower left sleeve, distinguishing it from the earlier Army AFRIKAKORPS formation title, normally worn on the right sleeve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe timing of its introduction was significant. German forces had been operating in North Africa since early 1941, when German formations were sent to Libya following the severe reverses suffered by Italian forces. What began as the Deutsches Afrikakorps expanded through several larger command organizations, ultimately becoming part of Heeresgruppe Afrika. By the beginning of 1943 the Axis position had deteriorated considerably, with forces retreating into Tunisia under increasing Allied pressure. The remaining German and Italian forces in the theater surrendered in May 1943.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original qualification requirements generally called for six months of honorable service in Africa. The time requirement could be set aside in cases involving wounds received during African service, while personnel evacuated because of illness contracted in the theater generally required at least three months of prior African service.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe regulations were subsequently modified as the North African campaign reached its conclusion. Personnel of Heeresgruppe Afrika who participated honorably in the final fighting beginning May 6, 1943 could qualify after four months rather than six. In December 1943 the regulations were broadened further, permitting the award irrespective of length of service when the recipient had earned a German gallantry decoration during the African fighting.
