In 1935 the German military introduced the K98k bolt action rifle or Karabiner 98 Kurz, as a replacement for the older GEW98 or Gewehr 98. A new, shorter bayonet was designed to go along with the shortened rifle. The K98 bayonet was officially named Seitengewehr 84\/98 III or SG 84\/98 III. The bayonet was designed as a close combat sidearm that could be placed on the tip of a K98.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe total length of the K98 bayonet was 15.2 inches, far shorter than the 20 inch long GEW98 bayonet. The blade was also straighter in shape and the hand guard was omitted. The K98 bayonet was carried in a leather frog, or Seitengewehrtragetasche, on the left side on the equipment belt in combination with the shovel and its carrier. The maker marks on k98 bayonets were stamped onto the top of the blade. The blade has the factory \"sharpening\", which did not really make the blade sharp: that was up to the soldier.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is runner wear near the tip which is still present, but otherwise the original finish on the blade is in good shape. The bakelite grip scales are in good shape, with no chips, and just some light wear. The bluing on the handle is still intact, but there are spots of light surface rust scattered on the hilt. The scabbard shows overall wear to the finish, but no major oxidation or dents, and fits the bayonet nicely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scabbard and blade bear matching serial numbers \u003cstrong\u003e95\/ F\u003c\/strong\u003e. The pommel is Waffenamt marked and the blade ricasso is also marked with \u003cstrong\u003eRICH. A. HERDER \/ 39\u003c\/strong\u003e (on spine) for 1939 manufacture by the well-known maker Richard Abraham Herder of Solingen, the legendary \"City of Blades\" in the mountains of Eastern Germany. The scabbard has the same marking on the reverse. Unfortunately the frog button on the scabbard is completely missing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBayonet and scabbard come complete with an original leather frog, which fits the scabbard nicely. The frog does show age, with the finish on the front showing a lot of cracking and some flaking. It features 3 intact steel rivets and no retaining strap.
