This worked well during the pre-war years, but it was found that the force from the chinstrap could easily deform the band, so from around 1937-1939 an additional layer of aluminum was used to support the chin strap loops on the second pattern. NSDAP authorities renamed Łódź to Litzmannstadt in honor of the German General Karl Litzmann who had captured the city in the previous World War.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe leather liner retains all eight fingers, which remain supple and show relatively little evidence of use. Each finger retains its leather reinforcement around the upper tie eyelet. The separate 58 marking on the leather is retained exactly as observed, while the assembled liner band itself is clearly marked 64 n.A. \/ 56.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo chinstrap is currently attached.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOverall condition is very good. The galvanized steel liner band remains intact, all eight leather fingers are present and supple, and the reinforcement pieces around the tie eyelets remain in place. The principal missing components are the top tie string and chinstrap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith its 1943 Biedermann \u0026amp; Czarnikow marking, 3rd Pattern galvanized steel construction, complete eight finger leather liner, and clear 64 n.A. \/ 56 size designation, this is a strong original M31 helmet liner assembly.
