Original German WWI U-Boat SM 53 Marked Trench Art Brass Beer Mug made from 77mm Casing - Dated 1917
Original Item: One of a Kind. No doubt made on board SM U-53 and sent home as a gift to the family, this is part of a 1917-dated Brass Casing for an artillery piece, probably for the 7.7 cm Feldkanone 96 and Feldkanone 16, beautifully transformed into a Beer Mug. The bottom of the shell still shows the original specifications: St. = Strengthened Shell, FN = Friedrich Niemeyer, HL = Haniel Luege Düsseldorf (brass factory) and 27 = inspection mark. It also has the date of JULI 1917. Uboat SM U-53 was in service from February 1916 to December 1918, so this shell is from the time period expected.
The shell has had a wood handle affixed to the side and a hinged German style lid added, making it a proper beer mug. The copper thumb lever on the lid unfortunately has broken off, but could easily be repaired. The side of the casing engraved with two IRON CROSSES, the first dated 1914 the second 1917, and the front of the tankard is engraved U53.
Long hours at sea had to filled with some pass times hence this gift for home. In nice condition, ready to display.
