This is a scarce original Imperial German WWI Eierhandgranate M1917 neuer Art, or Model 1917 “new type” egg hand grenade, surviving in non-ground-dug condition with period-applied red paint over portions of its original black finish. The red overpaint is consistent with use as a training or instructional grenade, although the precise circumstances in which it was applied are not documented. The grenade is completely inert and non-functional and is retained solely as a historical display artifact.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

This is a fine example of the second type, called the Eierhandgranate M1917 Neuer Art (Egg Hand grenade New Model), with the raised central fragmentation band. It is in non ground dug condition (as often encountered), and retains the original black painted finish underneath the period-applied red training paint. The original zinc and steel screw off fuse is present, but the wire is gone, and the fuze no longer screws in all the way. The fuze is also now seized inside the hole, and we could not remove it.

The compact Eierhandgranate remained one of the more distinctive German hand grenades of the First World War. Its basic concept was revived in later German service with the Eihandgranate 39 of World War II, although the later grenade was a separate design rather than simply a continuation of the M1917 pattern.

The survival of this example with its original body, retained fuze, visible black finish beneath the later red paint, and identifiable M1917 neuer Art raised central band makes it a strong representative piece of Imperial German trench ordnance. Its non-ground-dug condition is particularly desirable, and the later red finish adds an additional layer of historical interest consistent with subsequent training or instructional use.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwi-model-1917-n-a-eierhandgranate-egg-hand-grenade-with-period-red-training-paint-inert
