This is a nice condition Imperial German Pioneer enlisted man's Mannschaften (other ranks or EM / NCO) pickelhaube from the Kingdom of Württemberg. This example is of the M1891 pattern with silvered fittings, correct for Pioneer. The features introduced in 1887 proved to be completely unsatisfactory; the front visors were easily damaged without the leather trim and the loop and hook system used to hold on the leather chinstrap resulted in chinstraps being lost. An AKO of 08 January 1891 introduced a new model of Pickelhaube which attempted to address these shortcomings. The brass front visor trim was reintroduced and a new and ingenious system of securing the chinstrap was introduced. As with previous versions, the body was constructed from boiled leather, which was shaped and lacquered black.

This example is fitted with a reproduction leather chinstrap, but the cockades appear to be original, though the paint may have been touched up.

The silvered front wappen features the Coat of Arms of Württemberg, with a shield in the center showing three antlers that represent Württemberg on the left side, and the three lions of medieval Swabia on the right side. There is a wreath surrounding it made of Laurels on the right and Oak Leaves on the left. The Crowned Lion of Swabia supports the shield to the left, and the Stag of Württemberg supports it on the right. On a banner at the bottom is the motto of the kingdom: FURCHTLOS UND TREW ("Fearless and loyal"). The wappen is held in place by the standard leather wedges on the inside of the shell, which are both in good shape.

It is complete with the Württemberg (Red and Black) and German National Colors (red white and black) Kokarden (cockades) around the chin strap lugs. In 1897 the new Reichs-Kokarde in Red-White-Black was introduced for all ranks to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kaiser Wilhelm 1st. The Reichs-Kokarde was to be worn on the right side of the helmet, and the state Kokarde was moved to the left, as on this helmet. The Attached chin strap is reproduction.

The interior features an original leather liner, which shows moderate use, with one of the fingers now missing. The rest are joined by the securing strap. The size of the helmet is marked as 54 on the crown. There is also a name inscribed, Beurlen(?).

The exterior of the helmet is in fair shape with a nice shiny enamel finish, though it does show checking and crazing throughout, as shown. The rear visor is now extremely stiff and curled, but the pickelhaube is still solid. The spine has the newly-introduced movable vent. The spike base is missing one of the four rivets.

Overall a very good condition Imperial German pickelhaube from the Kingdom of Württemberg, perfect for any WWI collection!

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-german-wwi-kingdom-of-wurttemberg-m1891-silver-pioneer-em-nco-pickelhaube-spiked-helmet-with-original-cockades-size-54
