This is a traditional German first world war Bavarian \u003cem\u003eMannschaften\u003c\/em\u003e (Other Ranks) EM\/NCO brass mounted leather helmet known as a Pickelhaube, for the Foot-troops (Infantry). The M1896 Bavarian Pickelhaube was the final pre-1914 evolution in a long series of spiked helmets, and is very similar to the M1895 Prussian version. It was manufactured from boiled leather, lacquered black, and provided with fittings made of brass or German silver, dependent upon the Regt. The protection it offered was very limited and led to the eventual replacement by a steel helmet in 1916. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis helmet features a gilt brass infantry \u003cem\u003ewappen\u003c\/em\u003e (front plate) with the Bavarian coat of arms, over the kingdom's motto, \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIn Treue Fest\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, German for \"steadfast in loyalty.\" This wappen is much smaller than the previous 1886 version. The chin strap and both \u003cem\u003ekockarden\u003c\/em\u003e (cockades) are unfortunately missing. The rear support spine of the helmet has the correct vent hole with a sliding cover, only seen on the EM\/NCO versions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe nterior of the Pickelhaube is in good condition, but does show much use and staining. It has a correct black leather liner, complete with securing tie on the top. There is some damage over the ears due to wear and age. Due to the staining we cannot make out any markings on the interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe black leather shell's exterior shows normal age crazing and wear. The lacquer finished leather is in very good condition having no serious issues. There is also definitely some level of leather shrinkage due to age, which is why the some fittings are somewhat loose. Most however are nice and tightly held, and having pulled away much from the leather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is nice honest used WWI pickelhaube, which would fit well in any collection.
