Original German Pre-WWII Large Railway Oil Lantern by Eger & Blickle of Nürnberg - dated 1937

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Pre-WWII German Large Railway Oil lantern, made in 1937 by the Nürnberg-based company of Eger & Blickle. We have seen these described as "table lamps", but with the large reflector inside and design, this definitely was made for projecting a beam of light. It measures 17 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and 9 inches deep, which makes it larger than the typical lanterns we have seen.

It also has a dovetail slot on the right side, possibly for attaching to some type of mount, maybe on a vehicle. It is definitely an oil lantern, with large reservoir in the bottom, which can be removed using a pull knob on the side of the lantern. This knob also adjusts the wick, a very ingenious dual purpose design. Originally the lantern would have had a glass chimney or globe inside, but this unfortunately has been lost, as they are quite fragile. The lantern is made mostly from bent sheet steel, typical of lanterns of the era. It is maker marked on the bottom front:

EGER & BLICKLE
NÜRNBERG
1937

It is also marked 221 under the front window.

The lamp still disassembles correctly for cleaning, with the reflector able to be removed so that it can be polished. It also has a translucent panel on the rear, so that while walking the tracks, the user would be visible from the rear.

A very nice Pre-WWII Railway lantern, ready to display! It is also possible it might be returned to working order, but we cannot guarantee that.
