This is a very good example of the Mauser Model 1871 rifle bayonet with brass hilt, complete with the original brass-fitted leather scabbard. The bayonet is in good condition, and is not marked on the rear of the blade with an \u003cstrong\u003e1874 \u003c\/strong\u003eyear as well as the usual acceptance marks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe steel blade is 18 ½” long and is in good condition, and has not had the main edge sharpened at any time, so it still has the factory blunt edge. It has staining and pitting, but overall looks great.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade ricasso is maker-marked:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCOULAX \u0026amp; CIE.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKLINGENTHAL\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Coulaux family, or Coulaux \u0026amp; Cie (“\u0026amp; Cie.” is the equivalent to “\u0026amp; Company” in English) purchased the royal forge and swordmaking facilities of Klingenthal, France in 1838. The production of fencing blades and weapons began in 1850, and the Coulaux operators also exported their fencing blades to fourbisseurs and fencing supply houses such as Castello Fencing Equipment Co. of the United States and Souzy de Lacam of France.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe handle of the blade is in good condition, and has a fully functional bayonet latch. There are also some proof marks, as is typical on Imperial German bayonets. The steel \"S\" shaped crossguard does have a bit of oxidation in areas, and bears regimental marking \u003cstrong\u003e109.R.3.152\u003c\/strong\u003e, which we believe is for the 109th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Company, 152nd Man. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bayonet comes complete with its original brass mounted black leather scabbard which is marked with the \u003cstrong\u003esame regimental designation. \u003c\/strong\u003eThere are also proof marks on the hilt of the scabbard. During 1870–71 trials with many different rifles took place, with the \"M1869 Bavarian Werder\" being the Mausers' chief competitor. The Mauser was provisionally adopted on 2 December 1871, pending the development of an appropriate safety. With support from the government's Spandau arsenal, the improvements to the safety mechanism were completed and the rifle was formally accepted on 14 February 1872 as Infantry Rifle Model 1871 by the German Empire excluding Bavaria. General issue to troops began in late 1873 and all units had been converted by the spring of 1875.
