It shows signs of long service, but does not have any major wear or damage from abuse. This gives it a lovely worn patina that is simply impossible to duplicate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ludwig Loewe company was actually part owner of Mauser Waffenfabrik from 1887 onward, which is why they were the primary contractor for the export Mauser rifles. In 1896 the company consolidated its arms manufacturing, and founded \u003cem\u003eDeutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken\u003c\/em\u003e, the famous D.W.M.. All rifles made 1897 onward were marked with the new company abbreviation.. Therefore ANY LUDWIG LOEWE marked firearm is considered ANTIQUE by U.S. FEDERAL LAW. Most Chilean Contract M-1895 Rifles and Carbines found today are marked DWM, with examples by Ludwig Loewe being hard to find.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe left side of the receiver on this lovely example is marked with the production information:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ccenter\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMAUSER CHILENO MODELO 1895.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/center\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo the left of this is serial number \u003cstrong\u003eB 1484\u003c\/strong\u003e, which is also stamped on the bolt and magazine housing, with shortened serial number \u003cstrong\u003e84\u003c\/strong\u003e present on some of the smaller components. The marking on the stock has worn away, and the cleaning rod is worn, and no longer has a visible serial number, but both definitely look to be original to the carbine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe chamber still has the Chilean coat of arms marked on it, though it is a bit worn from cleaning, while the markings on the stock have unfortunately completely worn away. The metalwork, originally blued, now shows a polished steel patina from long service and cleaning. There is also some light pitting along the woodline next to the barrel by the front sight, so this definitely is a short rifle that was definitely carried around quite a bit. The only place that still has some of the original finish looks to be the magazine follower, which shows much of the 'Niter Blue\" finish. The bolt also still has the original bright steel finish, with some light oxidation on the turned down handle.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stock on this example definitely shows long use in service, with staining, dents, scratches, small gouges, and other wear from service. We do not see any cracks or repairs, and the stock feels solid. Please consult the high resolution pictures for condition details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rifle cycles well, with a crisp dry fire, though we are not able to check to see if the magazine still feeds. The three position safety on the bolt is fully functional, preventing firing in the up position, and locking the bolt closed when moved all the way to the right. The bore is in very good condition, with a dull finish and strong lands and grooves. There is a bit of overall fouling and oxidation, so this definitely is a rifle that saw some use during service.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother Military Contract from the Victorian era that Mauser managed to snag from all its European competitors.
