Cuirassiers were cavalry equipped with armor and firearms, and were also commonly called heavy cavalry. They were quite common from the 15th century, up until the late 19th century, and were heavily armored, and had swords to match.

This Model Heavy Cavalry Sword with its massive 37 ⅜ inch long double fullered straight blade was first issued around 1800 during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. The early models had a plain pommel mount and the three bar brass guard each ended in a "ball". After Emperor Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, a new design was decided on known as the Model of 1822 which did away with the ball tipped cross guard bars and added a circular "crown" to the pommel. The sword remained the same for the rest of the nineteenth century.

This M1854 Heavy Carabinier Cuirassier Saber is marked on the spine of the blade:

M"re Impule de Chât"t Mars 1858 = Carab"er M"le 1854 = C = 1882

This is an abbreviated form of Manufacture Impériale de Chatellerault, the French arsenal at the city of Châtellerault. The inscription indicates manufacture in March of 1858, and also indicates that this is a Model 1854 saber. The 1882 at the end may be when the sword was serviced, refurbished, or converted somehow.

The sword is stamped on the guard with serial number 1327, along with various French proof marks. The scabbard is stamped with serial number 12951, so it is not matching.

Condition is overall great, though the wire wrap of the grip is a bit loose now. The crossguard is also heavily dented and is cracking as a result. This example would have seen heavy fighting in the Franco-Prussian War. The scabbard does not show any dents, and still retains its single hanger ring. The bright steel has faded to a lovely oxidized patina.

A great example of the M1854 Heavy Carabinier Cuirassier Saber, ready to add to your collection!

Specifications:
Blade Length: 37 3/8”
Overall length: 43 3/4“
Scabbard Length: 38 1/4"

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-french-franco-prussian-war-m1854-heavy-carabinier-cuirassier-saber-by-chatellerault-with-scabbard-dated-1858
