This is a lovely OTTOMAN flintlock \"ball butt\" pistol made made in the classic style. These were intended to be held in a sash around the waist. It has an ornately silver wire inlaid stock, which also has many silver \"rosette\" inlays covering many areas. Some of these have lost the inlay material, but the design and inlets where they were are still clear. The pistol features an engraved 12 1\/2 inch barrel, and has an overall length of 20 inches, about the average size for this style of pistol.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis design was very popular in the Mediterranean market, and examples have been seen from all over the former Ottoman area of influence. This example is very nice, though definitely does show wear from age and use. The stock is missing some chunks near the muzzle, and it can be seen that there was a faux ramrod fitting under the forestock, a hallmark of the Ottoman design. The pistol looks to have not been made with any provision for a trigger guard.
