THIS IS REALLY SPECIAL, made in the early 1700s, maybe even in the 1600s, this iron barrel and iron mounted flintlock blunderbuss is possibly one of the most attractive examples of early Pilgrim and settler weapons we have ever handled. It features a big club butt with a lovely iron butt plate that has a long finial along the top of the butt. The elaborate iron trigger guard with fluted design to bow and 1727 First Model Brown Bess type trigger guard front finial. The openwork iron side plate is secured by two threaded bolts to a banana shaped iron lock plate. The frizzen is secured only by a single bolt with no reinforcement bridle.

The barrel is of the 17th Century style with a breech reinforcement behind an octagonal barrel tube of 21" to a front reinforcement, at which point the barrel flares for the front 3" to a full barrel length of 24". Both decorative and functional, these early blunderbusses were truly works of art.

The iron ramrod pipes are heavily turned, and the rear has a long tail. The walnut butt stock is in amazing condition with a few dings and age cracks. The stock around the barrel however definitely has some cracking and repairs to the wood, as pictured. The top of the blunderbuss has a tiny brass back sight partway up the barrel with brass bead fore sight at the muzzle. The stock ends to the front with a horn nose which looks every bit as old as the rest of the weapon.

A TRULY MAGNIFICENT SLEEPER which has not been messed with in 250 to 300 years.
