Original Dutch Napoleonic Named Naval Pewter Lidded Tankard from the ship Vrijheid - dated 1800

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. From the British Naval Collection we acquired in 2014, this the only Dutch Pewter tankard we have had that was used in the Napoleonic Wars Era. Standing 8" tall and 4" across the base, to contain perhaps a quart of beer or there about. The inside of the lid bears some interesting proof marks, and also has a date of 1756, so this tankard definitely has had quite a long life with lots of history.

The side of the tankard is engraved:- Vrijheid over an ANCHOR, the name of a vessel it was used onl. The lid is decorated with an impressive thumb piece shaped like an acorn. Research indicates that Vrijheid was a Dutch 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the navy of the Dutch Republic, the Batavian Republic, and later the Royal Navy.

The order to construct the ship was given by the Admiralty of Amsterdam. The ship was commissioned in 1782. She served for some years, and in 1795, the ship was commissioned in the Batavian Navy. On 11 October 1797 Vrijheid took part in the Battle of Camperdown as the flagship of Admiral Jan Willem de Winter. At a certain point, Vrijheid was engaged by four British ships, and after heavy fighting the ship surrendered. After this she became a British Ship, the HMS Vrijeid, until she was sold off in 1811.

The lid is marked in scroll engraving:-

Abd. Kloppenborg

We assume that perhaps this is the owner’s name, as Kloppenborg is a known family name. Now, the question is how it has a dutch name on it with a date of 1800, when the ship was captured in 1797. Given the age and history of the tankard, most likely the officers were allowed to leave the ship with their personal effects, and then it went back into service on another Dutch ship in 1800. Definitely some interesting research potential here.

The whole most attractive and highly desirable, ready to display! (Not recommended for use)
