This is a lovely crisp example of a rare Dutch Model 1848 "Ring Hammer" percussion pistol, which is in really great condition. It is definitely a substantial pistol, measuring 17 1/2 inches long, with an 11 inch barrel in about 0.69" caliber. The barrel is octagonal near the breech, and is marked clearly on the left side with the E / L G / * in an oval proof, for manufacture, in Liège, Belgium. Most likely the entire pistol was made in Liège, only about 10 miles from the southern border of the Netherlands. The pistol is covered with Belgian and Dutch single letter proofs under crowns. It is also marked BLACKSTONE on the left side of the brass side plate extension, most likely the name of a previous owner. The stamping definitely looks to have been made using individual letter stamps.

Similar to previous Dutch pistols, the most noticeable feature of the run is the large "ring hammer", which definitely makes cocking the lock easier, as the main spring is VERY strong. The pistol is brass mounted, with a very interesting nose cap design that connects to the side plate, similar to some French and U.S. percussion pistols. It has a butt cap with a very interesting shape, and the trigger guard is brass attached to a steel base. there is no provision for a ramrod on the pistol. The lock is still fully functional, and interestingly has two positions on the tumbler before full cock. It will only fire at full cock, as is correct, and will go past the two "half cock" positions. The stock is in lovely condition, with no cracks or major damage we can see.

A rare and unusual weapon, ready to research and display!

Specifications:

Years of Manufacture: circa 1850-1855
Bore Diameter: .698"
Ammunition Type: Lead Ball & Powder
Barrel Length: 11 Inches
Overall Length: 17 1/2 Inches
Action: Percussion Side Action
Feed System: Muzzle-Loaded

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
