Only One Available. This is an exquisite well-preserved example of the scarce Danish M1831 Officer’s shako. The shako features a tall black leather body with brass trim and front plate. The large brass insignia bears the crowned royal cipher \"\u003cb\u003eFR\u003c\/b\u003e\", consistent with the reign of King Frederik VI or Frederik VII. Leather-back chinscales are held in place by two Lion’s head bosses, and the front of the shako retains a faded white feather plume, giving the shako a total height of 18” when inserted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 1831 shako formed part of the Danish Army’s distinctive early 19th century uniform and remained in service through a period of major political and military change. Examples of this tall officer pattern are considerably less commonly encountered than later Danish military headgear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe helmet body has retained its shape mostly well though there is some deformation at the sides and the brass trim has partially separated from the body in spots. There is some crazing across the body and rubbing of the leather along the top edge. The chinscales are mostly complete, but the buckle on one side is gone, so the two ends are connected with string at the moment. It could be affixed more attractively for display.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe underside of the helmet has good wear, and there is a small museum tag on the underside of the rear visor reading \u003cb\u003e174\u003c\/b\u003e. The leather sweatband is entirely retained with a lovely scalloped pattern along its top edge. The prongs holding in the front plate are visible to the interior, but there are no other markings to be found.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Danish Army underwent substantial changes during the period in which this shako was worn. The reign of Frederik VI encompassed the final years of the Napoleonic era and the loss of Norway in 1814, while the reign of Frederik VII saw the transition to constitutional monarchy and the First Schleswig War of 1848 to 1851.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe crowned FR cypher, tall leather body, lion-head bosses, complete officer’s chinscales, white plume, brass edging, and scalloped sweatband preserve the principal features of this scarce Danish officer’s shako.
