All metal (iron) rusted and well pitted overall, a great example of "barn fresh" condition. However, aside from the condition, it is a great historical piece!

This is a standard French Model of 1842 Rifled Musket with a back action lock. These were imported in large numbers by the Confederate States during the Civil war, which is probably how it ended up in the United States. It is fully steel mounted and does bear a clear maker marking on the lock plate: Mre R'le de / Châtellerault, indicating manufacture at the Royal French Arsenal located in Châtellerault. It also still retains the original stock cartouches, with the rondel around MI showing a date of 1852.

The barrel is 40 1/2" in length and the rifled musket is 56" overall. The rust has obliterated all of the markings that would usually be on the metalwork, but the stock still has quite a few markings. The musket has all iron mounts including nose cap also covered in rust as is the trigger guard, barrel bands, small side plate and butt plate. Percussion nipple is now absent but the back action lock works just as it should.

Needs a full restoration or could be displayed just as it is.
