Just received out of an old attic, along with about a hundred other guns, this is a typical example of an Austrian Musket imported for the civil war. This lock is faintly dated 855 for 1855, along with an Austro-Hungarian Empire Eagle proof on the lock plate tail. Markings on the lock indiciate that at one point it definitely had a flash pan and frizzen, so this was converted from Flintlock to Percussion for the export market. The breech of the barrel was removed, and a new breech plug with a cap bolster was installed.

It originally had all iron mounts, but the gun was half-stocked after the war, to be used as a hunting / fowling gun. There is a simple bent zinc nose cap and a sheet steel "ring" to hold the barrel in place. Ramrod pipes have been installed under the barrel, and the rear sight was removed.

A very typical example of the eventual fate of muskets imported for the U.S. civil war.

Many of these were imported by the South in the Civil War. We know that over 100,000 Austrian firearms were released in the late 1850's when the New World was the BIG Market. So it is a matter of record: these muskets were used in the War between the States.

Specifications-

Year of Manufacture: circa 1850 - converted later
Caliber: .61"
Cartridge Type: Ball and Powder
Barrel Length: 36 Inches
Overall Length: 51 Inches
Action type: Side Action Lock
Feed System: Muzzle Loaded

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
