This is an original WWII-era National Flag of the Republic of China, constructed from multiple pieces of silk and retaining an unusual extended header inscribed “From: Chiang Kai Chek.” Measuring approximately 26 1\/2 x 36” including the extended header, the flag displays the familiar Blue Sky, White Sun, and Wholly Red Earth design used by the Nationalist government of China throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War and WWII. The flag shows substantial age and deterioration, most notably very heavy dye migration that has altered the appearance of the white sun, together with extensive staining throughout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe silk flag is a medium size measuring roughly 26 ½ x 36” including the extended header, and is of multi-piece construction, with the canton and sun being sewn separately. Unfortunately the flag has very heavy color bleed and the sun is now multi-colored. There is heavy creasing and staining across, and there is minor tearing in spots. In the 1930's, he was the military leader of the Kuomintang, the Chinese nationalist party, and served as President of the Republic of China at various times. He led the Chinese against the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War, starting in 1937, but also sent forces to remove the warlords controlling various provinces of China. We have no provenance linking him to this flag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe historical value of the flag rests securely in its WWII-era Republic of China design, sewn multi-piece silk construction, substantial wartime-associated format, extended header, and surviving “From: Chiang Kai Chek” inscription.
