Britain’s army at the beginning of the First World War was relatively small and professional. There was no conscription of population before 1916, and so recruitment of volunteers in large numbers became a huge challenge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Parliamentary Recruitment Committee was set up at the start of the War, and chaired by the Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith. It used local political party associations to form a network which campaigned through the circulation of leaflets and posters, and organizing rallies and other public events.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a lovely British World War I poster which states:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMORE MEN\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eARE WANTED FOR\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHIS MAJESTY’S ARMY\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWHO MAY ENLIST\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAll men who are 5ft. 3ins. and over, medically fit, and between 19 and 38, and all\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eold soldiers up to 45.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTERMS OF ENLISTMENT\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYou may join for the period of War only if you do not want to serve for the\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eordinary period of the regular soldier. There is scattered tearing and damage but this example will look amazing once framed.
