This is a very nice British Flintlock Officer’s Pistol, which looks to be intended for Sea Service or possibly for Dragoon Cavalry. It is very similar to the British Sea Service pistols first developed around 1715, which were typically equipped with a 12" iron barrel, full wood stock and brass furniture. The Butt Caps have short "ears" but not "long spurs" The lock plates were flat, not rounded and up until 1762 were marked with a maker’s name and date. On the left side is a long belt hook, which would be used at sea, but also might find use on a horse.

This example is somewhat shorter and smaller in bore than the typical British Sea Service pistol however, having only a 10 ½ inch barrel. It is marked on the lock plate with CROWN over G.R., for King George 2ND, who reigned from 1727 until 1760. Under the pan is the usual "Lock Viewer's" mark, and it is maker marked I / BUMFORD on the lock plate tail, over a date of 1755. We believe this was privately made by the Government Contractor named JAMES BUMFORD, who worked in London from 1720 to 1776. This pistol probably saw service in the French and Indian War 1756- to 1763, known in Europe as the Seven years War.

The pistol is in fine original condition displaying only ONE lock screw behind the cock, a style changed between 1757 and 1762 that indicated the use of a shorter sear spring. After 1762 one sees TWO screws behind the Cock, however occasionally the double screw appeared as early as 1757.

The banana shaped lock also does not have the outside frizzen support mount/arm from the pan, which were introduced somewhat later for additional stability. It features all brass Regulation mounts and is fitted with a 6 " belt hook on the left side of the stock.

In fine condition the trigger guard is engraved "1746" possibly a Military designation. The lock is functional, but has a worn tumbler, and will fire on both full and half cock.

Cleaned ready to display!

Specifications:

Year of Manufacture: 1755
Caliber: .59" Pistol
Ammunition Type: Lead Ball & Powder
Barrel Length: 10 1/2 inches
Overall Length: 17 inches
Action: Flintlock Side Action
Feed System: Muzzle-Loaded

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
