The Regiment was raised in 1715 by Brigadier James Dormer in response to the Jacobite Rebellion, and in 1751 it was re-designated to be the 14th Regiment of Light Dragoons. In 1798 it was renamed :-\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e14th (The Duchess of York's Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring the Napoleonic Wars, the Regiment served in Portugal from 1808, and accompanied the British Army Commander Arthur Wellesley right up to 1813. They fought at all the major Battles: Oporto, Talavera, Venta de Serra, Fuentes d'Onoro, Salamanca, Vitterio, Ortes and Toulouse before returning to England. They had been recalled, only to be shipped off to New Orleans in time to surrender at the great battle that ended the Anglo\/American War of 1812.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pistol is a standard full stocked flintlock pistol, used by British Light Dragoons across the empire. The Lock Plate is marked \u003cstrong\u003e(CROWN) \/ G.R.\u003c\/strong\u003e under the pan, with \u003cstrong\u003eTOWER\u003c\/strong\u003e across the tail, indicating production at the Tower armory for military use. The top of the barrel is marked \u003cstrong\u003e14. L - D \u003c\/strong\u003eand also \u003cstrong\u003eA \/ 27\u003c\/strong\u003e, indicating it came from the 14th Light Dragoons, Company A, the 27th trooper.
