This is a very interesting and hard to find British Flintlock Cavalry carbine, complete with an intact saddle ring bar and ring. At the time, the term "carbine" was more of a reference to a smaller caliber weapon than to one shorter in length, though as this example shows, it could be both. With a 28 inch long 0.65" caliber smoothbore barrel and overall length of 43 1/2 inches, this was definitely quite a bit shorter than the 58 inch long "Short Land Pattern" musket, but still definitely longer than many later carbines. Our example looks to have seen a good amount of use in service, but does not show any major damage.

The lock plate is correctly marked CROWN / GR under the hammer and TOWER on the lock plate tail near the small "teat". It also has a CROWN / DOWNWARD ARROW ordnance "lock viewer's" marking under the flash pan, which is the correct type with a rear shield. The lock features a frizzen support bridle on the pan, and the lock is fully functional, holding correct at half stock and firing only at full. The top of the barrel shows a CROWN / GR marking over a CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS marking, indicating Pre-1813 military inspection at the Ordnance Proof house on Tower Wharf close to the Tower of London.

The carbine is in very good condition, showing wear commensurate with age and service. The metal fittings show a lovely patina of age, with some signs of past peppering and corrosion along the woodline. The brass fittings all have a lovely mellow patina, and the stock has a great broken in look, with no signs of major damage or other issues.

A very interesting British flintlock cavalry carbine, ready to research and display!

Specifications:

Year of Production: Circa 1790
Caliber: .65"
Ammunition Type: Lead Ball & Powder
Barrel Length: 28 inches
Overall Length: 43 1/2 inches
Action: Side Action Flintlock
Feed System: Muzzle-Loaded

NOTE: International orders of antique firearms MUST be shipped using UPS WW Services (courier).
