Original British Napoleonic Sea Service Officer's Flintlock Pistol by Horton with Brass Barrel and Lock Plate
Original Item. Only One Available. This style of pistol was popular around the turn of the century, right when the Napoleonic Wars were raging in Europe. This is definitely an Officer's pistol, privately purchased for use at sea. While these usually just have a brass barrel, this nice example also has a brass lock plate as well! All of the other fittings look to be brass, or possibly nickel silver. The only iron parts on the pistol are the screws and lock parts!
This pistol has the extra support spur on the pan for the frizzen, so it is definitely a late 18th century example, or possibly early 19th. It has a lovely "long-eared" butt cap, and an attractive "open" side plate. The brass lock plate is signed faintly by Horton, which we believe to be a gunsmith who worked out of the Shropshire County area, on the England/Wales border. The lock features a half-cock safety, as have others from this maker. The lock functions correctly, even the safety, which often is the first thing to wear.
The barrel is a very nice half-octagonal, half-round design, and has Pre-1813 Birmingham area proof marks, indicating this is definitely Napoleonic. This is also the closest major gunmaking area to Shropshire County. The pistol is in very good shape, though it has been finished several times, including once with a rather thick varnish, which is chipping off in places as shown. It still presents very well, especially with the lovely hardware.
A very nice Naval Flintlock Pistol that would enhance any Napoleonic Collection. Ready to display!
