This is a magnificent Napoleonic Era British naval captain's fighting saber, complete with its original correct scabbard. The saber is named to \u003cem\u003eCaptain John Edgcumbe R.N.\u003c\/em\u003e, who was born in 1775 and died in 1837.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe saber has a fine checkered walrus ivory grip, with the stirrup hilt retaining much of its original gold wash. Into this is set a manly curved blade measuring 28\" with a wicked hatchet point. The overall length of the saber is 33\". The rain guards (langets \/ chappes) extending from the cross guard are engraved with an entwined \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJ.E.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003emonogram on one side, for Capt. Edgcumbe’s initials. The other side is engraved with a wild boar, the Mount Edgcombe family crest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe saber comes complete with its original brass mounted leather scabbard, all gilding now absent. In fine used condition this has come in from England, where it was on display in the family home until the second world war.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn Edgcombe was the nephew of the First Lord Earl of Mount Edgcombe, George Mount-Edgcombe (1721 - 1795). With the sword came an old crumpled photocopy or print out, giving history of Captain Edgcumbe’s Royal Navy service:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eEntered the royal navy as a midshipman in 1788 at age 13\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHe served on H.M.S. Carnatic, H.M.S. Trusty and H.M.S. Fairysloop between 1789 - 1791.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHe went onto H.M.S Aimable, H.M.S. Beaulieu, H.M.S. Ganges 1793 - 1796.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAfter this he served aboard H.M.S Royal George, H.M.S. Agincourt and H.M.S St. George 1797 - 1800 where he was promoted to Captain.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHe next went to the H.M.S. Heron in june 1804 and was Post commissioned 11th. May 1807.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFinally he was on H.M.S. Blanche in 1808 and commanded the frigate H.M.S.
