Original British Napoleonic Era Speaking Horn from HMS AJAX 1801
Original Item: Only One Available. A jolly interesting "Speaking Horn" (and it really works) constructed of folded steel with substantial join to which a large brass trumpet like mouthpiece has been soldered. The brass mouthpiece in faintly engraved "H.M.S. AJAX 1801.
Relatively crude in manufacture this, however, is exactly what His Majesty’s Navy used at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. These were used by Ship's Bosun's to shout orders to seamen in the upper rigging on Ships of the Line, also sometimes called a LOUD HAILER.
H.M.S. AJAX was launched in 1798 and was a 74 Gun Ship of the Line that saw action at The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 but was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1807.
