Only One Available. This is a very nice WWI-era brass bugle manufactured by the well-known firm of Bohland & Fuchs in Graslitz, Bohemia, then part of Austria-Hungary. Constructed entirely from brass with brass fittings, it follows the general military bugle form commonly encountered on Central European instruments of the Imperial period. The bugle shows honest use, with numerous small dents, scattered scrapes, areas of verdigris, and an attractive overall tarnished finish.

This example matches Prussian construction in all ways but two, the fittings are brass and not nickel silver, and there is no Prussian crest to the front. The reinforced bell bears a stamped marking:

BOHLAND & FUCHS
GRASLITZ

This denotes manufacture by Bohland and Fuchs of Graslitz, Austria-Hungary (now Czechoslovakia). Bohland & Fuchs was established in Graslitz in Bohmen, a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire (therefore the German spelling: Graslitz). Thus, the early instruments by Bohland & Fuchs are all made for Austria-Hungary. This example was likely issued in the Austro-Hungarian Army. It measures 10 ½” long.

Military bugles served as an important means of communication before and during WWI. Standardized calls could signal reveille, assembly, movement, meals, alarms, and other daily military routines. Even as telephones and other communications systems became increasingly important during WWI, bugles continued to be used for camp, barracks, ceremonial, and organizational purposes.

This example is particularly appealing for its clear BOHLAND & FUCHS / GRASLITZ marking, all-brass construction, retained mouthpiece, dual suspension rings, and untouched tarnished surface. The scattered dents, scratches, verdigris, and seized mouthpiece reflect its age and use without obscuring the maker marking or the overall form of the instrument.

https://www.ima-usa.com/products/original-austro-hungarian-wwi-military-bugle-in-prussian-style-by-bohland-fuchs-of-graslitz-circa-1914
