This is a great \"Attic Find\" condition Austrian-made Ersatz (replacement) bayonet with scabbard and leather frog, made to fit the Austro-Hungarian Empire's Mannlicher M1895 straight pull bolt action rifle, which was the principal Rifle of the first World War for the Austrian Empire. When WWI began, there was a shortage of bayonets, so these \"Emergency Issue\" bayonets were produced quickly to meet the need.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs can be seen, this bayonet is little more than a blade with a 90 degree twist in it, with a riveted-on muzzle ring and leaf spring catch. Definitely somewhat primitive, but highly effective for its intended purpose: making sure every rifle had a bayonet to go on it. The bayonet has several markings which could be unit markings, but we weren’t able to make a positive ID. The markings are\u003cstrong\u003e L.R.5 \u003c\/strong\u003ein one spot, a \u003cstrong\u003eJ \u003c\/strong\u003ein another spot, and \u003cstrong\u003eB 107 \u003c\/strong\u003eon the blade ricasso. A great opportunity for further research.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCondition is definitely \"attic find\", with an oxidized patina over most of the bayonet and scabbard. We have left it untouched, as it has been for decades, stored as part of a very large European collection.
