Original 18th Century British Private Purchase "Manstopper" .75" Flintlock Pistol by Smith of London - c. 1790
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful British privately purchased "Manstopper" Flintlock pistol, marked SMITH on the lock plate, and LONDON on the top of the barrel. It is in the very large .75" bore, the same size as the standard British Muskets of the line in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This meant that the soldier did not have to carry additional ammunition, and also meant that it would pack an incredible punch. We removed the barrel, and on the bottom it bears CROWN over CROSSED SCEPTERS markings, for William Ketland of Birmingham, England. These markings would eventually become the standard Birmingham proof mark after 1813
The pistol is 11 3/4 inches in overall length, with a 7 inch long barrel, and is very well appointed. It is all iron fitted, with engraving on the lock and trigger guard, as well as on the barrel tang. There is also a nice silver inlay on the breech of the barrel, and a silver escutcheon on the back, just above the checkered pistol grip. The pistol also features a very nice "captured" ramrod, which could not be dropped by accident. We have tested the lock, and it holds correctly at half cock, firing at full. The bore is clear, and shows only light oxidation. We do not see much sign of use, and the touch hole is clear.
A lovely British "Manstopping" Flintlock pistol, in great shape and ready to display!
