German WWII SS Marked Frostbite Salve Tin - 1.5"

Regular price $14.95

Item Description

There is a lot of controversy around these salve tins- real or fake? We have seen reports on many internet forums are declaring these tins as "fake" or "fantasy".  We purchased thousands of these in the early 1990s in a deal for Russian Maxim guns out of Finland (check our catalogs from 1993 where we first advertised these). When we purchased these we believed them to be original, however, we cannot verify that they are original. Additionally, someone in Europe or Asia has copied them and are now trying to pass them off as genuine. So, better to purchase these as a novelty as opposed to a historically authentic item.

Each 1.5" diameter tin is embossed "FROSTSCHUTZSALBE WEHRKREISSANITÄTSPARK VI, OSNABRÜCK, SS - PACKUNG". Tins and are filled with Vaseline type ointment. This slave was supposedly applied to faces and even  small arms in order to avoid freezing in the temperatures that fell to as low as -30 on the Russian front during the winter.
